OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (Courtesy of OSU Athletics) — Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team earned its first victory of the fall season on Monday, notching a seven-shot triumph at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Ilini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club.

With three true freshman in the lineup, OSU found itself atop the leaderboard with one round remaining for the second consecutive tournament. The Cowboys entered play Monday three shots ahead of Texas and finished seven shots clear of the Longhorns at 857 after posting a 10-over 290 during the final round.

“Considering we were in the same position at the Preview with a three-stroke lead going into the final round, it is exciting to win this time out,” Cowboy head coach Mike McGraw said. “Not only were we able to win the tournament, we were able to build on our lead and that is encouraging.”

After nearly matching Hunter Mahan and Jonathan Moore for the school’s low18-hole scoring record with his 63 on Sunday, freshman Rickie Fowler fired an even-par 70 during his final round to secure his first collegiate victory. The Murrieta, Calif. native, who was competing in just his second event as a Cowboy, finished at 7-under 203 and one shot ahead of Indiana’s Jorge Campillo.
Fellow freshman Kevin Tway also logged the best finish of his young career, claiming sole possession of sixth place at 5-over 215 after carding a 71 during his final round.

Sophomore Trent Whitekiller narrowly missed out on his first career top 10, tying for 12th place at 218 after a 78 during his final round. The finish was the highest in five career starts for the Sallisaw, Okla. native.

Freshman Mark Johnson tied for 28th after posting a 73 to come in with a 222 total. With his finish, the Tulsa, Okla. native has now placed in the top 30 in each of his first three career starts.

Junior Trent Leon carded a 78 during his final round to finish tied for 43rd at 226.

The Cowboys will return to action on Oct. 21 when they travel to Windermere, Fla. to take part in the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate.
